James Maddison Left Out of England’s Final Euro 2024 Squad

James Maddison Dropped from England's Final Euro 2024 Squad

James Maddison, who made England’s 33-player provisional squad for Euro 2024, has not been included in the final 26-player team. Despite playing 30 minutes in England’s 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Tottenham midfielder has now left the Three Lions camp.

Maddison is the first player from Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad to miss the final cut for the tournament in Germany. Southgate must finalize his squad by 11 pm on Friday, an hour after England’s final Euro 2024 warm-up match against Iceland at Wembley.

England will kick off their Euro 2024 campaign on June 16 against Serbia. Maddison’s wait for a major tournament appearance continues, having been part of the final 26-player squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but not making an appearance before England’s quarter-final exit.

Analysis: Maddison’s Exclusion from England Squad No Surprise

James Maddison had a strong start with Tottenham, scoring three goals and providing five assists in his first nine Premier League games, making him a strong contender for both Player of the Season and a spot in the England Euros squad. However, his form has declined since then. He is the first to be cut from Southgate’s extended squad, with even uncapped players like Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah making it further.

Maddison’s drop in form since March 10, with contributions only against Burnley and Sheffield United, and not starting in the friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina, were key factors. A three-month injury also halted his progress, but his performance drop-off in the latter half of seasons is a recurring pattern.

The impressive performances of Eberechi Eze and Cole Palmer in the friendly against Bosnia likely influenced Southgate’s decision. With world-class options like Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden also available, Maddison, who was a last-minute inclusion in the 2022 World Cup squad, is now the first to be cut from the Euros squad.
