Israel’s Airstrikes in Lebanon: A Historic Campaign Amid Rising Casualties

Israel's Airstrikes in Lebanon: A Historic Campaign Amid Rising Casualties

Israel has launched an unprecedented airstrike campaign in Lebanon, with recent attacks resulting in over 1,400 deaths and nearly 7,500 injuries, according to the Lebanese health ministry. This wave of violence has displaced more than one million people in the region.

The barrage, which Israeli officials claim targets Hezbollah strongholds, is being described as the most intense aerial campaign outside of Gaza in the past two decades. Emily Tripp, director of the conflict monitoring group Airwars, remarked that the scale and intensity of Israel’s strikes exceed those seen in recent military operations conducted by its allies, highlighting a level of aggression not witnessed in years.

In a dramatic escalation, Israel reportedly used 2,000 munitions in just two days, including a significant spike in strikes on September 24 and 25. In comparison, during most of the U.S. military’s 20-year engagement in Afghanistan, fewer than 3,000 annual strikes were recorded, underscoring the severity of the current situation.

Community sentiments have shifted dramatically as the air campaign continues. While many observers noted the considerable military capabilities of Israel, concerns are rising regarding civilian safety and the potential for political fallout.

The recent revelations about the operations were further complicated by a tragic moment of remembrance when Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid called for a moment of silence on September 25 to honor the victims of recent violence.

As the conflict rages on, authorities have noted the severe humanitarian toll. The recent escalation has led to widespread destruction in areas like southern Beirut, where significant civilian infrastructure has been damaged. Tragically, information emerging from hospitals indicates that among the deceased are at least 127 children.

Women and girls have been disproportionately affected by the ongoing crisis, as noted by CARE International’s Lebanon director, Michael Adams. Shelters for displaced individuals are overwhelmed, with nearly half of the occupants being children, leading to dire conditions in emergency accommodations.

In a stark reminder of the gravity of the situation, Israeli airstrikes are now reaching central Beirut for the first time in nearly two decades. Furthermore, over a quarter of Lebanese territory is currently under military evacuation orders, as Israel intensifies its ground operations, prompting fears of a broader invasion.

With more than 100 villages in southern Lebanon on evacuation notices, residents are left uncertain about their future, with no clear timeline for returning home or what conditions they may find upon their return.
