Police officers from Phuket’s Thalang Police Station are investigating an incident involving a foreign man who went on a rampage at a pizza restaurant near Phuket Airport, damaging property and injuring the owner. The incident, which took place in Sakhu Subdistrict, Thalang District, around 2 a.m. on September 27, has sparked widespread criticism online, especially concerning disruptive tourists causing problems for residents and other visitors to Phuket.
After identifying the location, police visited the owner of Daruka Pizza and Pasta in Moo 1, Sakhu Subdistrict, to advise on filing a complaint. A Khaosod reporter spoke with the owner, Ms. Nga, and her foreign husband, who recounted the events leading up to the rampage.
According to the couple, a German man initially visited the restaurant, saying he would order pizza and return later. The husband suggested preparing a fresh pizza for his return. About 30 minutes later, the man came back wearing a dress and carrying a bag. He ordered a pizza, a beer, a shot of liquor, and soda water. He lingered at the restaurant for an extended period, refusing to leave, even after the couple mentioned they needed to put their child to bed. When he mentioned he had no hotel accommodation, the husband offered to drive him to the airport.
Around 2 a.m., while Ms. Nga was putting her child to bed, she heard the sound of a car starting, followed by crashing noises and shouting. Rushing downstairs with her child, she found her husband had been assaulted, and their car damaged. She attempted to call the police via 191 but couldn’t get through, so she tried 1669 for help, but the call was cut off. Eventually, she contacted an employee for assistance.
Ms. Nga’s husband described the attack, explaining that as he prepared to help load items into the car, the German man threw several glasses, shattering them in the restaurant. The man then twisted off both side mirrors of their car, opened the driver’s door, took the keys, and threw them away. Ms. Nga’s husband, avoiding confrontation, walked behind the van, but the German man put him in a headlock and pushed him down. When Ms. Nga arrived, her husband managed to break free and urged her to call the police.
In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Ms. Nga dragged the man’s suitcase inside and told him to wait for the police and take responsibility. However, the man fled to a nearby convenience store, where he continued his rampage, frightening the staff.
Later that evening, police arrested the man in front of the convenience store. Despite his erratic behavior, he apologized before being taken in to calm down and for further questioning. Legal action against him is expected to follow.
