Gen Torsak tipped to be new national police chief

Deputy police commissioner Pol Gen Roy Ingkapairote will be designated chief of the National Security Council (NSC), paving the way for Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol to become the new police commissioner, a reliable source revealed today (Monday).

Next September, both Roy, the most senior deputy commissioner of the four, and Torsak, the second most senior, will be eligible for retirement.

If one of them is promoted to the top police position, replacing Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat, who is scheduled to retire at the end of this month, one of them will step down as deputy commissioner.

“Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is likely to transfer Roy to head the National Security Council and appoint Torsak as the new police commissioner,” a source said.

Former prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, as the previous chairman of the Police Commission, delegated the selection of the new police commissioner to Srettha, citing good governance.

Chief of the NSC has historically been held by non-NSC officials, primarily from the military. Gen. Supoj Malaniyom, a former joint chief of staff, is the current NSC director and will retire at the end of the month.

Earlier, the source reported that the military intended to nominate Maj. Gen. Nakrob Boonbuathong, the deputy director of the ISOC’s coordinating center, as the next NSC secretary general.
