Flualprazolam, a powerful tranquilizer, is commonly used in Thailand’s four southernmost districts, according to officials, after traces of it were discovered in nimetazepam pills at Regional Medical Sciences Centre 12 in Songkhla.
It is the first time that the drug has been discovered in Thailand.
Dr Supakit Sirilak, director-general of the Department of Medical Sciences, stated on Wednesday that Regional Medical Sciences Centre 12 had been tasked with analyzing nimetazepam pills, also known as Erimin 5, which is classified as a Category 2 psychoactive medication.
The authorities discovered flualprazolam in the nimetazepam pills. Flualprazolam is a benzodiazepine tranquilizer that relieves anxiety and is used to treat panic disorders and sleeplessness.
Nimetazepam, nitrazepam, phenazepam, diazepam, clozapine, and etizolam were discovered in Erimin 5mg pills in 2013. Flualprazolam was discovered for the first time in Malaysia and Singapore in 2021.
Nimetazepam 5mg, marketed as Erimin 5, is illegal in Thailand. According to sources, the substance is frequently utilized in the four southernmost provinces, particularly Narathiwat. Pattani, Yala, and Songkhla are the other three border provinces.
Dr. Supakit went on to say that additional medications may have been blended with nimetazepam in order to avoid prosecution. He described flualprazolam as a synthetic benzodiazepine with a chemical structure comparable to the sedative alprazolam, a Category 2-listed psychiatric drug.
Flualprazolam is not a prescription medicine, and clinical research on it has not yet been published. Nonetheless, Dr. Supakit stated that its chemical component indicates that its effects will be noticeable within 10-30 minutes and will last 6-14 hours.
