FBI Director Wray to Resign Before Trump Takes Office

FBI Director Wray to Resign Before Trump Takes Office

FBI Director Christopher Wray has announced he will resign before President-elect Donald Trump takes office next month, amidst expectations that Trump would seek to dismiss him.

Wray conveyed his decision during an internal FBI meeting on Wednesday, stating he had taken weeks to consider the move. Trump has nominated Kash Patel, a vocal critic of the FBI and advocate for restricting its authority, to replace Wray as the head of the agency.

Wray, who was appointed by Trump in 2017 to a 10-year term, has faced significant criticism from Republican lawmakers, particularly due to the FBI’s investigations into Trump after he left office. In his remarks, Wray expressed, “I’ve decided the right thing for the bureau is for me to serve until the end of the current administration in January and then step down,” emphasizing his desire to prevent the agency from being embroiled in political disputes.

His statement was met with a standing ovation from attendees, with some reportedly in tears.

After firing James Comey, Wray’s predecessor, over investigations into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election, Trump praised Wray’s “impeccable credentials.” However, tensions escalated between the two following the FBI’s involvement in a federal inquiry regarding Trump’s handling of classified documents, a case that has since been dropped.

Trump remarked on Truth Social that Wray’s resignation signifies a “great day for America,” asserting it would end the “weaponization” of the FBI and restore the rule of law.

Following his re-election, Trump confirmed Patel as his choice for FBI director—a former aide who has consistently supported the incoming president. Patel expressed enthusiasm for a smooth transition, stating, “I look forward to earning their trust and confidence through the advice and consent process, and restoring law and order and integrity to the FBI.” His appointment requires Senate approval.

In the interim, FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate, a seasoned agent, will lead the bureau after Wray’s departure, per reports.

Patel’s controversial stances have raised questions regarding his qualifications for such a significant role. Nevertheless, some Republican lawmakers have welcomed his nomination, with Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa advocating for needed reforms within the FBI.

Wray has consistently denied claims of bias against conservatives, emphasizing his lifelong Republican affiliation in past testimony to lawmakers. Following the resignation announcement, Democratic Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin thanked Wray for his service, acknowledging the potential challenges ahead for the agency under new leadership.

Attorney General Merrick Garland also praised Wray’s tenure, underscoring his honorable service and integrity throughout his years with the FBI.

FBI directors are typically appointed for 10-year terms to ensure stability amid political changes at the presidential level. Wray’s term was due to last until 2027, and Trump’s selection of Patel for the role would necessitate Wray’s resignation or dismissal.
