Kurdish Forces Halt Anti-ISIS Operations Amid Turkish Threat

The commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), General Abdi Mazloum, has warned that the rise of ISIS is being fueled by the chaotic conditions following the recent advances by opposition groups against President Bashar al-Assad.

In light of rising tensions, the SDF has suspended its counterterrorism operations in Syria, raising concerns that ISIS prisoners held in detention facilities may escape during the unrest. Mazloum stated that the regional turmoil presents both an opportunity and a significant risk for the fight against ISIS.

The SDF, primarily composed of Kurdish forces from the YPG and YPJ, received backing from the U.S. in its fight against ISIS, particularly during the height of the conflict. However, increased clashes with Turkish-backed groups, like the Syrian National Army, have complicated the SDF’s efforts.

In his remarks to Sky News, Mazloum emphasized that ISIS has become more active, noting, “ISIS is now stronger in the Syrian desert. Previously, they were in remote areas, but now they have greater freedom of movement since they face no opposition.” He highlighted recent incidents where three members of the Internal Security Forces were killed in an ISIS operation near Al Hassakah.

With the civil war causing deep divisions across Syria, local and international powers exert influence in various regions. The SDF was formed in 2015 as a coalition to combat ISIS, but ongoing violence and the geopolitical landscape have complicated their mission.

Despite attempts at communication between local commanders and rebel groups to ease tensions, the relationship with Turkish-backed forces remains challenging. Turkey fears the influence of Kurdish groups near its border, viewing the YPG and YPJ as extensions of the PKK, a group designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey.

As the situation escalates, the SDF’s ability to focus on countering ISIS weakens. Mazloum noted, “Joint operations against ISIS are halted not by decision, but by the military reality,” stressing that ongoing conflict diverts resources and attention away from combating ISIS.

He expressed concerns about the security of detention centers housing ISIS prisoners, emphasizing that while Syria celebrates the potential end of the Assad regime, the danger of a resurgent ISIS looms large, reminding all that the fight against this group is far from over.
