Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is eager to return to Wimbledon, where he will kick off the tournament by opening play on Centre Court on Monday.
The 21-year-old Spaniard, who defeated seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in last year’s final, will face Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal at 13:30 BST. Alcaraz, now the third seed, relishes the honor of starting his title defense on the iconic court.
“It is great to be back at Wimbledon, and it feels even more special as the defending champion,” said Alcaraz, fresh off winning his third major at the French Open. “Last year brought great memories, and I’m excited to start the tournament and aim for the same result.”
Raducanu Leads British Hopes on Day One
Emma Raducanu, another key player for the Brits, returns to Wimbledon in the second match on Centre Court. The 21-year-old, who missed last year’s tournament due to injury, will take on Russian 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova at around 16:00 BST.
“It’s a tough match,” said Raducanu, currently ranked 135th in the world and playing as a wildcard. “Alexandrova has great weapons, especially on grass. I’m expecting a difficult match and see myself as the underdog. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get a good scalp and enjoy playing.”
Gauff, Wawrinka, and British Wildcards in Action
Reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff will follow Raducanu on Centre Court, facing fellow American Caroline Dolehide in the third scheduled singles match.
Several British players will also compete on Monday. Wildcard Charles Broom debuts at Wimbledon against three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka on Court Two at about 14:00 BST.
“It’s a good draw,” said 26-year-old Broom. “Stan’s a tennis legend. I’ll go in with no expectations, play my game, and enjoy the experience.”
Other British wildcards Heather Watson, Liam Broady, Arthur Fery, and Lily Miyazaki, as well as qualifier Sonay Kartal, will also be in action.
