The John Wick Universe is expanding. After the explosive finale of John Wick: Chapter 4, fans got a taste of more with The Continental on Prime Video and Ana de Armas starring in the upcoming spin-off, Ballerina. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Donnie Yen is set to reprise his role as the blind assassin Caine in his own standalone spin-off.
In Chapter 4, Caine was last seen after a (seemingly fatal) duel with Keanu Reeves’ Wick, confronted by Akira (Rina Sawayama) in Paris. However, it appears Caine survives, as the new film will continue his story after being freed from his obligations to the High Table. Details on the plot are still under wraps, but the film is slated to shoot in Hong Kong in 2025, with The Umbrella Academy writer Robert Askins penning the script.
Yen expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the role, stating, “Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an extraordinary experience. These films resonate because they push the boundaries of action, fights, and stunts, expressing character, story, and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role.”
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelman added, “From the moment Donnie Yen appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4, he captivated audiences and created an emotional connection that left fans wanting more. The John Wick universe offers a tapestry of fascinating characters, and we’re thrilled to have one of the world’s biggest superstars continue this journey.”
This announcement follows news that Chad Stahelski will have full creative control over all future Wick projects, including any spin-offs or sequels to his upcoming Highlander reboot. While the release date for the Caine spin-off is still unknown, fans can rest assured that something Wick-ed this way comes.
