Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has commented on the ongoing public opinion poll initiated by Minister of Public Health Somsak Thepsuthin regarding the reclassification of cannabis as a narcotic. The poll, running from June 11th-25th, aims to gather feedback to inform future policy decisions.
Anutin, also leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, expressed his support for the Ministry of Public Health’s democratic process and emphasized the importance of public input. However, he stressed the need for expert consultation in addressing the complex scientific aspects of the issue. Anutin highlighted the distinction between decriminalization, which regulates access to cannabis, and reclassification as a narcotic, which would impose stricter controls.
Having championed cannabis legalization previously, Anutin affirmed that while public opinion is crucial, ultimate policy decisions should be guided by elected representatives in the best interest of the nation. He trusts Minister Somsak to navigate these considerations effectively.
Early results from the poll indicate more opposition than support for reclassifying cannabis. Some officials advocate for legislation to manage cannabis use instead of reclassification.
