Beginning on June 1, citizens who have secured a new British passport will no longer get a confirmation letter from the British embassy in Bangkok.
According to a news release from the embassy, the Thai immigration office has consented to transfer visa stamps from the old British passport to the new one without a document to that effect.
For an undisclosed reason, embassy personnel have long maintained that a letter of this nature is not legally binding.
This has led to uncertainty when British expats request to renew their passports while physically present in the UK and a letter of this nature is not issued.
Other countries (those who are not British) should check with their local immigration office to see if they still need to submit an embassy letter.
