BMW driver killed in crash with turning truck

An estate developer was killed in a collision with an 18-wheel trailer truck making a U-turn on a highway in Bang Lamung district on Thursday night, police said.

The accident occurred about 7.30pm on Highway 331 between kilometre markers 23-24 in tambon Pong of  Bang Lamung.

Apisak Phrakhamchanthuek, 41, the driver of the trailer truck owned by S1 Logistics Company, said he had delivered a cargo of salt to Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate in Rayong and was heading back to Prachin Buri.

He was making a U-turn on the highway when a black BMW sedan crashed into the middle of the truck.

The car went up in flames. He used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames and found the driver dead inside the vehicle. He called police, Mr Apisak said.

The BMW was totally crushed, wedged under the truck’s trailer.

Rescuers took about 30 minutes to extract the dead driver from the wrecked car. He was identified as Krisda Phayungpol, 31, the owner of a housing project and a construction and design company.

Police were investigating to establish the cause of the accident and take legal action.
