Assistant village chief killed in drive-by shooting

A former assistant village chief was killed in a drive-by shooting in this southern border province on Monday, police said.

Pol Col Komkrit Srisong, Nong Chik police chief, said Arong Yeng, 61, was returning home on a motorcycle when he was shot multiple times by unknown gunmen in tambon Pulopuyo, Nong Chik district, around 7pm.

Arong died on the spot and the gunmen fled the scene.

Police were investigating to find out if the attack was related to insurgency in the region or a personal conflict.

Since the insurgency reignited in 2004, more than 7,000 people have been killed and 13,500 others injured in violence across the southern border provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, according to Deep South Watch, a local think-tank.
