The real reason behind Anthony Gordon’s limited role in England’s Euro 2024 campaign has been revealed following a summer of speculation and confusion.
Gordon, 23, played just two minutes in England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final, a surprising outcome to many fans who had expected more involvement, especially given his impressive form at Newcastle United during the 2023/24 season. He scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists but was ultimately omitted from the final squad by manager Gareth Southgate.
According to Telegraph Sport, the England boss felt that Gordon was more preoccupied with rumors regarding a potential move to Liverpool than focusing on his international contributions. Despite being a lifelong supporter of Liverpool, the proposed transfer did not materialize, and Gordon continued at St James’ Park.
A report further indicated that Gordon has struggled to shake off the disappointment of missing out on the move, having only scored once this season. Former England manager Gareth Southgate was aware of the distractions affecting Gordon’s performance, which contributed to his lack of playing time during the Euros.
“Gordon only featured briefly as a substitute during the group stage and did not see further action in the tournament,” stated journalist Luke Edwards. Newcastle informed Gordon of their firm stance on not selling him, urging him to move past any disappointment regarding the Anfield transfer.
Recently, Gordon’s performance has been under scrutiny, particularly after a lackluster display against Fulham that ended with his substitution in the 83rd minute. The return of teammate Harvey Barnes from injury adds further competition, with Barnes already tallying three goals this season.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe addressed Gordon’s situation, confirming that the young winger has been focused on his club career despite the speculation. “There have been no distractions. He’s been really impressive in training,” Howe stated. “His attention has been solely on Newcastle, and I’m confident he is okay. He’s always been a player who gives everything for us, and that’s crucial.”
