Biden Allows Ukraine to Use Long-Range Missiles Against Russia

President Joe Biden has granted Ukraine permission to use U.S.-supplied long-range missiles for strikes deeper into Russian territory, easing restrictions as tensions escalate with the Kremlin. This decision follows reports of thousands of North Korean troops being deployed to support Russia in its ongoing war against Ukraine.

Zelensky expressed optimism about the potential impact of Trump’s presidency on the conflict, stating he had a “constructive exchange” with Trump following his electoral victory. While he did not disclose any specific demands made by Trump regarding negotiations with Russia, Zelensky noted he hadn’t heard anything that contradicted Ukraine’s stance.

Trump has consistently emphasized his goal of ending the war, claiming that U.S. military support places a strain on American resources. Earlier this year, Congress approved a $61 billion military aid package for Ukraine, which has received approximately $55.5 billion worth of weapons and equipment since the start of the conflict.

However, public support for U.S. military aid to Ukraine has reportedly declined, especially among Republican voters, whom Trump has courted. During his campaign, Trump suggested he could swiftly resolve the conflict but offered no specific plans for how he would do so.

In reaction to recent developments in the war, including significant Russian advances on the eastern front, Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution, stating that rapid peace deals could jeopardize Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

The recent political climate has led to divisions, with concerns that Trump’s administration may lean towards accepting territorial concessions in a bid to end the conflict. As Trump prepares to take office in January, there’s apprehension among Ukraine’s allies regarding the potential consequences of a rushed settlement.

Amidst these talks, the Biden administration has faced pressure to provide Ukraine with advanced military equipment. Despite initially resisting providing tanks and air defense systems to Ukraine, Biden has progressively agreed to enhance military support, albeit still operating under caution regarding the risk of escalating tensions with Russia.

As of now, U.S. officials continue to assess the implications of Ukraine’s expanded military capabilities, especially in light of North Korea providing troops and munitions to Russia as the war drags on. This move from the Biden administration signifies a pivotal shift in U.S. policy as the conflict in Ukraine enters a critical phase.
