A group of Thai women was arrested in Sattahip for illegal card playing, having been misled by social media claims that such gambling was permissible without permission.
local police received a tip-off from concerned citizens about a group playing Pok Deng behind a restaurant near Bang Saray Night Market. Officers quickly responded to the report.
Upon arrival, they arrested four unidentified women and confiscated evidence, including a deck of Pok Deng cards, 240 baht in cash, and a cloth used for the game. The suspects were taken to Sattahip Police Station for further legal action. According to the police, the women violated the Gambling Act of 1935 and were charged with “engaging in unauthorized gambling for financial gain.” During questioning, the women explained that they had seen numerous social media posts claiming that playing cards was now legal in Thailand and that they could do so anytime, anywhere. They admitted they were unaware of the need for official permission before playing.
It’s important to note that the specific regulations for obtaining this legal permission remain unclear, though they appear to require proper business licenses, designated locations, and collaboration with district officials. Private games are still not legalized.
