The investigation was spurred by concerns raised by Council Member Anupong Phutthanavarat during a city council meeting on September 18th. Phutthanavarat reported numerous complaints from businesses and residents accusing officials of demanding bribes, which had caused delays for those who refused to pay. These allegations have severely damaged Pattaya’s civil service reputation and eroded public trust.
Mayor Poramet emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “The integrity of our public institutions is at stake.” Complaints have been lodged with both the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the Damrongtham Center, identifying some complainants and officials, while others were filed anonymously. Despite the lack of specific details in some reports, the mayor stressed the importance of a comprehensive investigation.
The initial phase will involve questioning the accused officials. If the matter remains unresolved, a formal committee will be established for a more in-depth inquiry. If misconduct is confirmed, the officials involved will face strict disciplinary actions and potential criminal charges.
Reaffirming his commitment to transparency, Mayor Poramet stated, “We will ensure fairness and accountability.” He also pledged to introduce new measures to improve transparency in the building permit process, possibly including real-time monitoring technology for public applications.
