Ahead of the upcoming movie The Mandalorian & Grogu, Star Wars has set up a storyline for Grogu (Baby Yoda) in The Mandalorian that could prove problematic to the character’s future. Grogu’s fond nickname of “Baby Yoda” alone embodies much of the reason why he’s become one of Star Wars’ best characters. The adorable factor of Grogu’s character keeps viewers coming back time and time again, especially when it enhances moments in the heartfelt relationship between him and his adoptive father, Din Djarin.
This cuteness factor has essentially become the basis of his character. Many general audiences still know Grogu solely by the name “Baby Yoda” rather than his actual name, with The Mandalorian characters even referencing in-universe how ridiculous they think the name Grogu is for the little green guy. Grogu’s actions have largely spoken for him in the absence of his voice ever since The Mandalorian‘s first episodes, proving early on how much he cares for his father and their allies – but this could all change very soon.
The Mandalorian season 3 had a linear storyline for Grogu that foreshadowed him being able to speak soon. It was, arguably, one of Grogu’s biggest conflicts in season 3 that he could not speak. Upon finding Bo-Katan Kryze to get help for his father, Grogu himself couldn’t explain what had happened, and it was outright stated later on that Grogu couldn’t become a Mandalorian apprentice until he could speak and swear the Creed. Though there was a loophole around this that has since allowed Grogu to become his father’s apprentice, Grogu’s still been set up to start speaking soon.
