Ms. Traisulee Traisoranakul, Secretary to the Minister of Interior and spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, announced on July 12, 2024, that the ministry has issued four new announcements to update visa measures. These changes align with the global competition to attract foreigners to generate revenue and stimulate Thailand’s economy. These measures are in line with the Srettha Thavisin government’s policy to boost tourism by making travel easier for foreign tourists.
The four announcements from the Ministry of Interior are as follows:
- Visa Exemption Expansion: An announcement detailing the list of countries and territories whose passport or travel document holders are exempt from the visa requirement for temporary stays in Thailand for tourism, professional, or short-term business purposes. The list now includes 93 countries/territories, up from the previous 57. This allows visitors from these countries to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days in special cases.
- Visa on Arrival (VOA) Expansion: An announcement increasing the list of countries eligible for Visa on Arrival at immigration checkpoints from the previous 19 to 31 countries/territories.
- Destination Thailand Visa (DTV): An announcement introducing a new visa category for tourism and remote work. The DTV visa is aimed at highly skilled individuals, freelancers, remote workers, or those who wish to stay in Thailand for activities such as Thai boxing and martial arts, cooking classes, sports training, medical treatments, training courses, seminars, and art and music exhibitions. The DTV visa allows for stays of up to 180 days at a time and is valid for 5 years.
- Extended Stay for Students: An announcement updating the rights for foreign students who come to Thailand on a non-immigrant visa, code ED, for study or higher education. This measure is designed to attract skilled and potential workers to Thailand’s labor market by allowing graduates to stay in Thailand for an additional year after graduation to seek employment, travel, or pursue other activities.
Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has reviewed and signed all four announcements, which have been submitted to the Prime Minister for signature. They will then be published in the Royal Gazette, with all announcements coming into effect simultaneously on July 15, 2024.
