Kylian Mbappe is a major doubt for Euro 2024 after breaking his nose during France’s match against Austria. The injury, confirmed by the French Football Federation, occurred late in France’s 1-0 victory when Mbappe collided with Kevin Danso’s shoulder while attempting a header, leaving him bleeding profusely.
Chris Iwelumo discussed the injury on talkSPORT, confirming the severity: “His nose is definitely broken.” Following the incident, the 25-year-old was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of Dusseldorf for surgery.
The exact duration of Mbappe’s recovery is unclear, but he is likely to miss France’s next match against the Netherlands on Friday, which will be broadcast live on talkSPORT.
Mbappe received extensive medical treatment on the pitch and was eventually forced off. However, he was booked for re-entering the field without the referee’s permission in an apparent time-wasting effort before collapsing again. Roy Keane criticized Mbappe’s actions on ITV: “To go back on the pitch and sit on the pitch? He deserves that yellow card – I don’t like to see it.”
Mbappe was replaced by Olivier Giroud, who led the French attack in the final minutes. France secured the win with an own goal by Maximilian Wober, which resulted from Mbappe’s run and cross.
Despite his recent agreement to join Real Madrid, Mbappe’s focus remains on completing his international trophy collection this summer.
