Doug Liman is having a busy 2024. Following the success of his Jake Gyllenhaal-led Road House remake, Liman is back with another action-comedy, this time starring Matt Damon. The Instigators, set to premiere on Apple TV+ on August 9, features Damon alongside Casey Affleck in a Boston-set crime caper.
Damon and Affleck play reluctant criminals, attempting a heist to take down a corrupt politician. The film boasts a strong ensemble cast, including Hong Chau, Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Ron Perlman. With Liman’s signature action sequences and Damon’s full Boston accent, the film promises to be an engaging summer streaming flick.
Apple TV+ seems committed to big-name action-comedies, with The Instigators following the upcoming Clooney-and-Pitt crime caper Wolfs. The movie is a family affair for Boston’s cinematic sons, with Casey Affleck co-writing and Ben Affleck producing alongside Damon.
The official synopsis teases a chaotic adventure: Rory (Damon) and Cobby (Affleck) are a desperate father and an ex-con forced together for a heist. When the plan goes awry, they are chased by police, bureaucrats, and crime bosses. Enlisting Rory’s therapist (Chau) in their wild escape, they must overcome their differences to evade capture.
We’ll see if Liman can replicate his Road House success when The Instigators arrives on Apple TV+ on August 9.
