The Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for 15 pharmaceutical syrup products intended for children after the discovery of the toxic substance ethylene glycol. Dr. Narong Apikulvanich, the secretary-general of the FDA, announced on Saturday that samples of these syrup products were sent for safety testing to the Department of Medical Sciences.
Following the tests, it was revealed that 31 series of these 15 products contained ethylene glycol at unsafe levels. Consequently, the FDA has ordered an immediate recall of these items. Dr. Narong emphasized that while this finding is concerning, consumers should not panic as the substance poses a hazard only if 500 or more bottles of the products were consumed. However, he advised consumers to consult a doctor if they experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or stomachache.
Ethylene glycol, despite its sweet taste, is not fit for consumption and is typically used in the production of polyester fiber.
