The leader of a passport forgery gang who fled from China to Thailand to evade capture has been arrested in Bangkok’s Sathon district, according to police reports.
Immigration police detained the suspect, identified only as Chun, at a condominium on Suan Phlu Road, stated Pol Maj Gen Phanthana Nutchanart, deputy commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, on Wednesday.
Chun was wanted on an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court on April 17 for falsifying and using forged passports. He initially claimed to be of Surinamese nationality, but authorities later verified that he was a Chinese national.
Immigration Division 4 had previously learned about a foreign gang involved in forging passports and facilitating illegal entry into the country. Investigators obtained approval from the Bangkok South Criminal Court to search a condominium in the Sathon area, where they found Chun.
Chun presented documents indicating he was the tenant of the room. Inside, authorities discovered documents such as a driving licence, bank passbooks, and copies of passports, according to Pol Maj Gen Phanthana.
Among the seized documents was a Taiwanese passport in Chun’s name. However, checks with Taiwanese authorities confirmed it was a fake.
The bureau also coordinated with Chinese authorities to verify Chun’s records. It was confirmed that he was a Chinese national wanted for leading a passport forgery gang. He had fled to other countries using fake passports before arriving in Thailand, Pol Maj Gen Phanthana added.
