AN AUSTRALIAN man who faces charges for wrong-way driving his sedan over 30 kilometres from Chonburi to Rayong said he had got lost and after that the GPS system took him the wrong way, Sanook.com said today (Jan. 16).
Police began investigating this incident after a video clip of a black Ford Mustang going the wrong way down Highway 36 (Bypass) road from Chonburi to Map Kha subdistrict, Nikhom Phatthana district, Rayong province, at around 9 p.m. on Jan. 12 was shared online by a well-wisher as a warning to other drivers to be careful.
Today they finally tracked down the driver, Mr. Joseph, 43, an oil rig engineer who lives in a house in Chonburi’s Bang Lamung district.
Police brought the Mustang to Nikhom Phatthana station for examination before inviting Joseph in for questioning. They are holding the vehicle for investigation.
He acknowledged that he drove this sedan that night and explained that he had gone out to fill petrol and lost his way.
He then followed the GPS system to return home and this took him on the wrong way for over 30 kilometres to Rayong before bringing him safely home.
Joseph apologised to the Thai people for what had happened but nevertheless faces three charges with these being driving in a reckless or terrifying manner that may cause harm to other people or their property; driving without regard for the safety or the suffering of others; and not going in the specified direction (wrong-way driving).
