A prisoner murdered his cellmate after discovering he raped his younger sister, a court heard.
Shane Goldsby, 26, has had almost 25 years added to his sentence for killing convicted child molester, Robert Munger, 70.
Goldsby ended up sharing a cell with Munger at Airway Heights Corrections Center in Washington, US.
He ‘snapped’ after hearing Munger – serving a 43-year sentence for child rape, molestation and and possession of indecent images of children in 2019 – describing his crimes in graphic detail.
Goldsby beat Munger to death in the communal area of the prison, repeatedly stomping on his head and hitting him more than a dozen times, in June 2020.
Munger died three days later from his injuries.
Goldsby – initially jailed for stealing a Washington State patrol vehicle and injuring a state trooper during a chase in 2017 – has now been sentenced to an additional 298 months behind bars.
The Washington Department of Corrections insisted it has a policy that should have stopped Goldsby and Munger being assigned to the same cell.
But there was ‘no indication’ of a ‘potential conflict’ in documents for housing assignments.
Staff were also unaware of the connection due to different names of family members, according to Spokesman.com.
However, Goldsby claims he was ignored after learning the devastating truth about Munger – and alerting authorities.
He also says he pressed the emergency cell button ahead of the murder – but no prison guards responded.
He told news outlet KHQ: ‘This stuff doesn’t happen. You’re talking the same institution, the same unit, the same pod in the same cell as this dude.
‘That’s like hitting the jackpot in the casino seven times.’
The prison said it was conducting its own internal investigation as well as cooperating with the police and courts.
Goldsby apologised to Munger’s family during the sentencing hearing.
He became overcome with emotion prompting his lawyer, Victoria Lynn Blumhorst, to read out his statement on his behalf.
‘I cannot imagine what it would be like to lose a loved one in this kind of way,’ the statement said.
‘To his wife and his whole family, I apologise.
‘I am so sorry and I hope you are able to heal from what I caused.’
The statement added: ‘I’m ashamed of my actions, I was put in a situation that I don’t wish on nobody.
‘I got a lot of fixing to do.’
