What To Expect
Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is in development, but when can fans of the franchise expect it to release, and how will the story continue? Not only is the sequel film being produced, a female-led spinoff film has also been announced. Here’s what we know so far about the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
When Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was released, its enormous success was unexpected. Before 2003, pirate movies were seen as guaranteed box office flops, but the franchise has remained popular ever since, constantly proving its international mass appeal and earning Depp an Oscar nomination for his role as Jack Sparrow.
After Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth movie in the series, earned close to $800 million worldwide, Disney announced plans for another pirate swashbuckling adventure back in 2018. And with the studio expressing a desire to change up the franchise to make it even bigger in the future, Disney announced another installment – a reboot with Margot Robbie in the lead role – would go into development alongside the sequel. However, after several years Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is still in early development with its release on the distant horizon, and the reboot film is also in the early development stages.
After Deadpool co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick dropped out of the project in 2019, Disney chose writers Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott to write the script instead. Mazin created HBO’s mini-series Chernobyl while Elliott worked on the first Pirates movie. Director Joachim Rønning is also set to return.
Back in 2018, Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production’s President, Sean Bailey, was open to the idea of giving the franchise a “kick in the pants,” saying in an interview for The Hollywood Reporter that the studio wanted to bring new energy to the movies. Speculation and rumors have suggested the new movie would be a soft reboot of the franchise, similar to the Transformers prequel spinoff Bumblebee, but it’s unclear what would be wiped out from the series’ past storylines and timeline.
Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 Release Date
There’s no confirmed release date for Pirates of the Caribbean 6. However, movies in the franchise have been traditionally released either in July or May. The last three installments, At World’s End, On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales, dominated the box office on Memorial Day weekend, and it seems likely the sixth movie would be released around the same period to carry on this success.
With the exception of Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End (filmed back-to-back in 2005), a four to five-year wait between Pirates of the Caribbean movies has been the norm. Considering Bruckheimer hinted the script would be finished soon, the project may have been close to filming before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted production schedules. With no announcement of a potential release date, or confirmation on the effect of the pandemic, it’s impossible to know exactly when the movie might release, but it could be as soon as 2023.
Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 Cast
Casting for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has been a source of speculation, and the big question of Johnny Depp’s role continues unanswered. Once, a Pirates movie without Jack Sparrow seemed to be as improbable as Marvel Studios recasting the role of Tony Stark. However, over the years the franchise’s critical and domestic appeal declined along with Depp’s reputation. Scandals and commercial flops put in doubt the assumption of if his return as Jack Sparrow would be worth the price tag for Disney. In a recent interview, Bruckheimer at least keeps the door open for the actor’s return. However, for now signs point to Captain Jack Sparrow playing a minor role, if he has any role at all.
Meanwhile, actress Kaya Scodelario revealed to Screen Rant that she’s contracted for another movie and would be interested in returning. Bill Nighy has also expressed the desire to play the iconic villain Davy Jones once again. Lee Arenberg, who played the pirate Pintel, is another past cast member happy to appear in another movie. Stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom have not expressed any interest as of yet after their diminishing presences in the series’ most recent installments; although rumors have indicated Disney’s interest in their return.
Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 Story Details
After changing hands back in 2019, the script for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is in development and no announcements about its status have been made. Creators have been quiet on details, but rumors circulated Disney wanted a female-driven story, and fans quickly jumped at the idea of going back to the original theme park ride for inspiration. Recently changed from captive to pirate queen, the character of Redd would be a welcomed addition to the franchise while giving a nod to the ride that started it all. However, with the reboot announced to be the female-led project that was at the heart of the rumors, this story could apply more to that production, with the sequel film telling another story.
Pirates Of The Caribbean Reboot Details
In June of 2020, it was announced that a reboot film was in the works for Pirates of the Caribbean, starring Margot Robbie. The Harley Quinn star will be joined by screenwriter Christina Hodson (per THR) after the two worked together on Birds of Prey. As well as Hodson has worked on another blockbuster title that reinvigorated the Transformers franchise: Bumblebee. Like Pirates of the Caribbean 6, there are no announced story or release date details for fans to look forward to, but it proves there’s plenty of life left in the Pirates franchise in the future.
