Covid fatalities 38, new cases 2,817

Health authorities have reported 36 new Covid-19 fatalities and another 2,817 cases, bringing the totals to 1,213 deaths and 174,796 cases.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said on Saturday that 2,502 of the new infections were in the general population and 315 in prisons.

But the daily number of patients who had recovered, at 3,396, surpassed that of new cases for the first time in several weeks, said spokesman Taweesilp Visanuyothin.Ads by Brightcom

Of the cumulative 174,796 cases since the start of the pandemic, 124,093 people had recovered. A total of 49,490 were still in hospitals, including 1,195 in critical condition and 361 on ventilators.

Dr Taweesilp said the 36 new deaths, 21 of whom were men, were aged between 24 and 92, or 68 on average.

Sixteen of them were in Bangkok, four in Samut Prakan, three in Nonthaburi, two each in Chon Buri, Nakhon Sawan and Samut Sakhon, and one each in Phetchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Tak, Ayutthaya, Phatthalung, Ratchaburi and Songkhla.

The main underlying conditions among them were high blood pressure (19), heart disease (9), diabetes (7), high cholesterol (7) and others.

Most of them had contracted the disease from infected family members and visits to outbreak areas.

There were 58 clusters of infections in Greater Bangkok. Among areas under maximum surveillance were Bang Kapi market, The Mall Bang Kapi, a construction workers’ camp on Ramkhamhaeng Soi 7, Makro Lat Phrao and Khlong Chan housing estate in Bang Kapi district, Klong Toey market, crowded communities and an Italian-Thai construction workers’ camp in Klong Toey.

New clusters were reported in five districts of Nong Chok, Lat Krabang, Pathumwan, Yannawa and Rat Burana, said Dr Taweesilp.

Bangkok logged the most cases at 925, followed by Pathum Thani (411), Samut Sakhon (293), Samut Prakan (143), Phetchabui (130), Nonthaburi (78), Trang (52), Ayutthaya (49), Chon Buri (40) and Songkhla (38).

Of the 2,817 new infections, 2,446 were local infections. The 56 imported cases were arrivals from Cambodia (46), Israel (1), South Africa (2), Bangladesh(1), Brazil (1), Bahrain (1), the Netherlands (2), India (1) and Malaysia (1). They were a South African national, a Brazilian, two Dutch nationals, one Malaysian and 51 Thais. Eighteen of the Thais had entered the country from Cambodia via natural border crossings in Sa Kaeo province.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 416,773 in 24 hours to 173 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 10,237 to 3.72 million. The United States had the most cases at 34.19 million, up 16,925. India was second with 28.69 million cases, up 121,476. Thailand ranked 80th.
