A teenager who stabbed her boyfriend to death in front of his dad after she flew into a “fit of temper” during a drunken argument, has been jailed for life.
Ellie Wain plunged a “fearsome” blade through the heart of Kieran Brown after a row broke out on June 1 this year.
A court heard the pair, both 18, ended up in an altercation outside their home in Willenhall, Coventry before a scuffle broke out in the street.
During the scrap, Wain produced a large kitchen knife and stabbed Kieran several times causing a 12 inch deep chest wound.
She continued to slash at him with the knife as he got into the car of his horrified dad, who watched the killing unfold.
Kieran was driven to hospital by his father but died soon after arriving at around 10.10pm despite the best efforts of medics.
Wain was arrested and claimed she had acted in self-defence and Kieran had been stabbed accidentally.
She told detectives she “never loved anyone like she loved” Kieran but she was “scared” at the time and “wanted to protect herself”.
Jurors were told the couple’s on-off relationship was volatile and Wain had been drinking alcohol and smoking cannabis earlier that day.
They had argued while walking their dog that evening before it descended into violence once they returned home.
The court heard Wain armed herself with the blade and hid it in her clothing “in a sinister way” before she “went for” Kieran while “full of anger”.
Wain was convicted of murder on Monday and was jailed for life to serve a minimum term of 17 years at Coventry Crown Court on Tuesday.
Sentencing, Judge Andrew Lockhart QC told Wain she had spun a “web of lies” to police to try and absolve herself after carrying out the “murderous act” with a “huge kitchen knife”.
Following the case, Kieran’s family described him in a statement as “a kind loving son, grandson and great grandson.
“His life was cut short by the cruel actions of Ellie Wain in a fit of temper because things weren’t going her way.
“We won’t see Kieran grow into a man, he won’t get married or have children
“There is no sentence that will bring Kieran back our family are living a life sentence of our own – a huge hole has been left where Kieran should be.
“Ellie is young and will get to have a life at some point she has taken this opportunity from Kieran”.
Detective Inspector Adam Jobson, from West Midlands Police, said: “If Wain hadn’t armed herself with the knife, she would not have been able to inflict the fatal injuries she did, and Kieran would still be alive today.
“This will now mean she loses her freedom for a long time.
“This is yet another reminder of the fatal consequences that carrying and using knives can have.
“I urge anyone that picks up a knife to stop and think before it’s too late… there is no going back.”
