The cabinet has officially announced Friday, April 12 as a special government holiday, creating a five-day weekend for the Songkran festival.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin highlighted that the decision was made two months in advance, enabling individuals and businesses to adequately prepare. He has also directed the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to endorse second-tier provinces for the extended holiday, which will now span from April 12 to 16.
Traditionally, April 13 to 15 are celebrated as Songkran holidays. April 16 has been declared as a substitute holiday for April 13, which falls on a Saturday.
The cabinet secretariat emphasized that besides promoting tourism, the elongated holiday period would help alleviate traffic congestion by affording people more flexibility in organizing their travels.
