Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged allies to take decisive action before North Korean troops stationed in Russia reach the battlefield. His call comes as military leaders warn of one of the most intense offensives by Russian forces since the start of the war.
Zelenskyy highlighted the potential danger after U.S. intelligence reported that around 8,000 North Korean soldiers are now in Russia’s Kursk region, ready to assist in combat against Ukrainian forces. He suggested the possibility of a preemptive strike on the training camps for these troops, indicating that Ukraine knows their locations. However, he emphasized the need for permission from allies to utilize Western long-range weapons for such an operation.
In a post on social media, he expressed frustration that allied nations, including the U.S., are merely observing the situation. “America is watching, Britain is watching, Germany is watching. Everyone is just waiting for the North Korean military to start attacking Ukrainians as well,” he stated.
Zelenskyy’s comments align with a significant shift in the battlefield dynamics, as well as the rising concern regarding the coalition between Russia and North Korea. Meanwhile, Ukrainian army chief General Oleksandr Syrskiy reported that forces are facing one of Moscow’s most powerful offensives since the conflict erupted in February 2022. He noted that this strain on his troops necessitates ongoing resource renewal.
In addition to the growing conflict with North Korean involvement, Russian military operations have intensified, particularly along the eastern front, where Ukrainian forces are gradually losing ground. Recent airstrikes have resulted in civilian casualties, including an overnight missile strike in Kharkiv that killed a police officer and injured several others.
The violence and anxiety surrounding potential escalations continue to mount, prompting renewed calls from Ukrainian officials to bolster support and coordination with allies to address the evolving threats. The situation highlights the complexities of international relations and security concerns as the conflict in Ukraine enters a critical phase.
