Wigan Warriors delivered a stunning performance, thrashing Salford Red Devils 64-0 to retain the League Leaders’ Shield in the Betfred Super League.
The match showcased Wigan’s offensive prowess, highlighted by a hat-trick from Jai Field. The Warriors were already assured a place in the semi-finals and quickly asserted their dominance, leading 28-0 at halftime, thanks to tries from Liam Marshall, Field, Bevan French, Zach Eckersley, and Jake Wardle.
Field completed his hat-trick after the break, while Marshall and French each added another try, and Kruise Leeming scored twice against a Salford side that featured eight debutants as head coach Paul Rowley chose to rest key players ahead of their upcoming elimination playoff.
In a separate match on Thursday night, Huddersfield Giants wrapped up their season with a 34-10 victory over Castleford Tigers.
Peet’s Pride in Performance
Wigan head coach Matt Peet expressed pride in his team’s achievement, stating, “We’re very proud. This win reflects our consistency this season. While it’s not the end of the season or the trophy we ultimately want, it’s important to take pride in our performance.”
Team captain Liam Farrell added, “To be the most consistent team of the year is a great feeling. We’ve put in the hard work, and that’s paid off for us.”
Huddersfield Ends Season on a High
In the other match, Huddersfield Giants concluded a challenging Super League campaign with a solid 34-10 win against Castleford. Tui Lolohea impressed with a remarkable solo try, while Sam Hewitt added two tries for the Giants.
Castleford managed to score twice in the second half, but their disappointing stretch continued, marking their eighth loss in nine matches.
Looking Ahead
Wigan Warriors will enjoy a week off before their home Super League playoff semi-final against the lowest-ranked remaining team, while Salford Red Devils await to learn their fate for the upcoming elimination round.
