Understanding the Australian Visa Medical Examination

As part of your Australian visa application, you may be required to undergo an Australian visa medical examination. While all applicants for a permanent visa, such as a partner visa, are required to undergo this medical examination, temporary visa applicants, such as visitor visa applicants, will need to undertake a medical if their intended stay in Australia exceeds 3 months or if special health circumstances apply.

The required medical examinations will be determined by the visa you have applied for and whether any special circumstances exist. The cost of these medical examinations is not included in the visa application fee and must be paid directly to the hospital where the examinations are conducted. After a visa application has been submitted to the Department, you will be advised of the required medical examinations and the necessary timeframe for completing them.

When making your appointment for your visa medical examinations, the hospital will ask you for a unique number, known as a HAP ID number, which appears on the top right-hand side of the Department’s medical request letter you will receive after submitting your visa application. This document not only specifies which medical examinations need to be undertaken and the deadlines but also informs the hospital of what needs to be done. It is important to note that visa medical examinations cannot be done by any doctor of your choice but must be conducted by an Australian government-approved doctor, known as a ‘panel physician’.

In Thailand, Australian visa medical examinations can be conducted in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Udon Thani only. If you are required to undergo a visa medical for your Australian visa, it must be completed within the required timeframe, and you must satisfy the health criteria before your visa can be granted. Once completed, the results are sent directly to the Department. If any further follow-up tests are required, you will be notified by the Department. In Thailand, there have been cases where applicants’ visa medical examinations were deferred for further tests after anomalies appeared in their chest X-rays, potentially indicating past exposure to or presence of tuberculosis (TB).

At Thai Visa Express, we can assist applicants not only with the professional preparation and submission of their visa applications to the Australian Embassy in Bangkok but also with providing the required biometrics and arranging visa medical appointments. Our experienced team is here to ensure that you navigate the process smoothly and meet all the requirements for your visa.
