Rayong Man Sentenced to Home Detention for Slapping Nurse
RAYONG, Thailand – A man who slapped a nurse at Rayong Hospital after she denied his request for his daughter to visit her ailing grandmother has been sentenced to home detention and fined by the Rayong Provincial Court.
The court handed down the sentence on Wednesday to 46-year-old Sanpong, an industrial estate worker, following the incident that occurred on February 16.
Sanpong had requested that his young daughter be allowed to visit her grandmother, who was being treated in the ICU for influenza. The nurse denied the request, warning that the visit could expose the child to infection. In response, Sanpong lost his temper and slapped the nurse twice, an act captured on hospital security cameras.
During the trial, Sanpong admitted to assaulting a government official on duty, explaining that he reacted emotionally to the nurse’s tone. Due to his confession, the court reduced his original three-month sentence to one month and 15 days, to be served outside of prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay 77,273 baht in compensation to the nurse. Sanpong has placed 60,000 baht in cash to support his bail request and intends to appeal the verdict.
