Neal Maupay has condemned a group of Everton fans who gathered at a train station to verbally abuse the club’s players following a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in London on Saturday.
After the loss, players and staff were returning to Liverpool from Euston train station when a group of frustrated fans congregated outside the ticket barriers, shouting insults at them. In footage of the incident, players like Jordan Pickford and Mason Holgate can be seen acknowledging the angry crowd.
Maupay, however, did not take kindly to the insults thrown at him, which prompted an escalated reaction from the fans, who hurled words like “f**k off” and referred to him as a “rat,” questioning his £80,000 weekly wage.
In response to the situation, Maupay took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his frustration: “Imagine another job where it’s normalised to get abuse like this. Hanging around at a train station to scream at men who are trying their best…”
His comments highlight the unacceptable nature of the fans’ behavior and call into question the treatment of players in high-pressure situations.
