A mass brawl erupted after Turkey’s victory over the Czech Republic, securing their place in the Euros round of 16. Tensions were high as Turkish players clashed with their Czech opponents following the decisive win.
The final group stage match of the 2024 European Championships took place on Wednesday night, with Turkey defeating Czechia 2-1. A dramatic 94th-minute winner from Cenk Tosun ensured Turkey’s advancement to the round of 16, where they will face Group D winners Austria.
Turkey’s victory placed them second in Group F, behind Portugal. However, the celebrations were short-lived as a fight broke out between Turkish and Czech players moments after the final whistle. This altercation resulted in a red card for Czechia’s Tomas Chory and yellow cards for Czech captain Tomas Soucek and Turkish star Arda Guler.
The match was already intense, with a record-breaking 18 cards issued: 14 yellow cards and two red cards, marking the most cards in a single game in UEFA European Championship history.
Heading into the game, Czechia needed a win to advance to the knockout stage. Despite equalizing in the 66th minute, they finished bottom of Group F with just one point.
If Turkey continues to exceed expectations, they could potentially meet England in the tournament, as both teams are on the same side of the knockout bracket. However, both Turkey and England must navigate past strong opponents like the Netherlands, Italy, and Switzerland to reach the finals.
In the other Group F fixture on Wednesday, Georgia, the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, pulled off a stunning 2-0 victory over Portugal, allowing them to advance. Georgia now faces a challenging round of 16 match against Spain, the only team to win all three of their group stage matches.
