Chelsea and Manchester United are potentially on the verge of one of the most ambitious swap deals in football history as the summer transfer window approaches its deadline.
Both Premier League clubs had disappointing campaigns in the 2023-24 season, prompting a flurry of activity in the transfer market this summer. Each club has made signings aimed at strengthening their squads, but they also have players who need to be moved on.
Jadon Sancho’s situation at Manchester United requires urgent attention, as he appears to have no future with the club. The English winger spent the latter half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund after falling out with manager Erik ten Hag. However, no permanent opportunities have emerged for him thus far.
Chelsea made headlines recently when Raheem Sterling’s representatives requested clarity on his future after he was excluded from the matchday squad for the opening game of the season. Manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged that both Sterling and fellow England player Ben Chilwell are likely to find it challenging to get minutes this season.
All three players—Sancho, Sterling, and Chilwell—are available for transfer, but their high wages serve as a barrier for prospective buyers.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea could propose a swap deal to entice United into parting with Sancho. Reports suggest that Chelsea may include both Sterling and Chilwell in their offer, potentially avoiding a transfer fee for Sancho.
This plan is ambitious, especially as Sancho is generating interest from Juventus, who are seeking a loan arrangement. However, United might prefer a deal with an obligation to buy, avoiding sending Sancho to a direct rival in the Premier League.
Additionally, Manchester United has previously expressed interest in Chilwell as they look for a left-back to mitigate Luke Shaw’s injury issues.
