An assistant village head has been charged with killing and dismembering his mother after she threatened to tell police he had raped his teenage daughter.
Investigators said the 35-year-old told the head of the village in Wiang Pa Pao district what he had done yesterday and asked him to contact police.
The names of the man and his mother have been withheld to protect the identity of the young rape victim.
News of the gruesome murder spread quickly through the shocked community, where the man had been helping residents build a fire barrier yesterday.
He was waiting inside his house when police arrived.
The man then led the officers to a storeroom behind his house where parts of his mother’s body, minus the head, were found in a container under some ice.
When asked where the head was he told officers he had buried it along the Wiang Pa Pao-Phrao road and took them there to recover it. Police later took him to re-enact the crime at his house.
According to police, the man had broken up with his wife about a year ago and was living with his 15-year-old daughter.
His 53-year-old mother subsequently learned that her son had raped the girl. She confronted him about it, which led to a heated argument during which she threatened to go to the police.
Investigators said the man then stabbed his mother to death at around 4am on Thursday before dismembering her, stuffing most of the parts in an ice container and burying the head.
Yesterday morning while helping to build the village fire barrier, relatives and neighbours asked him where hid mother was.
After initially refusing to say anything he later admitted what had happened to the village head.
