Liverpool are optimistic about retaining one of their key defenders, Joe Gomez, following his reversal on a potential transfer. The 27-year-old had previously shown interest in leaving the club, with reports linking him to a move to Newcastle United.
Newly appointed manager Arne Slot is still assessing his squad as he prepares for the upcoming season. While the futures of several players remain uncertain, Gomez has chosen to commit to Liverpool in order to become a pivotal player in Slot’s plans.
Earlier this summer, Newcastle had expressed willingness to pay £45 million for Gomez, and he was reportedly intrigued by their proposals. However, with the Premier League season approaching, he has decided to stay put. According to the Sunday Times, Gomez is focused on proving his value under the new head coach at Anfield.
While negotiations between Liverpool and Newcastle took place, they never progressed to the point where Gomez had direct talks with Eddie Howe’s team.
Liverpool will likely continue to strengthen their defense, especially with Virgil van Dijk’s contract expiring in 2025 and Joel Matip having departed last season, leaving the squad somewhat thin defensively. Gomez represented England at Euro 2024 but did not feature prominently during the tournament.
There have also been media speculations regarding interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, but Gomez remains contracted with Liverpool until 2027 and is eager to play a significant role under Slot for the 2024/25 season.
