Leeds United claimed their first Championship victory of the season by defeating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Hillsborough.
After losing to Southampton in the play-off final back in May, Daniel Farke’s team began their campaign with a 3-3 draw against newly promoted Portsmouth, followed by a stalemate at West Brom. In this match, they weathered early pressure from Wednesday and took control of the game.
Leeds opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Brenden Aaronson curled a strike into the net following an impressive team move. Just two minutes into the second half, they doubled their lead; Mateo Joseph’s pass sliced through Wednesday’s defense, allowing Dan James to race clear and finish with a smooth chip.
Sheffield Wednesday fans thought they had scored when Di’Shon Bernard connected with a powerful throw-in, but his header went just inches wide. Leeds goalkeeper James Beadle kept the scoreline intact by denying further attempts from James and Joseph as they sought to extend their lead.
With this win, Leeds moved up to fourth in the early league standings, while Sheffield Wednesday fell to 13th after suffering their second straight defeat without scoring.
