Jude Bellingham is reportedly set for a significant fine following his X-rated gesture against Slovakia but will avoid a ban, leaving him available for England’s crucial quarter-final clash against Switzerland on Saturday.
After scoring an incredible overhead kick in the final moments of the game, Bellingham directed a crude gesture towards the Slovakian bench. According to German outlet BILD, he could face a fine as a sanction, but suspension is highly unlikely.
Following the game, Bellingham took to X to clarify that the gesture was not meant to offend: “An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight.”
Slovakia has decided not to press charges, and Bellingham’s defensive tweet could aid his case. BILD also noted that Emiliano Martinez’s crude gesture at the 2022 World Cup final went unpunished, suggesting Bellingham should receive similar treatment.
Having the Real Madrid star available is undoubtedly a significant boost for Gareth Southgate’s side.
