Lionel Messi shines as Argentina set up Holland quarter-final clash

Argentina progressed to the quarter finals of the World Cup following a narrow 2-1 victory over Australia.

Lionel Messi, making his 1000th career appearance, scored his first ever goal in the knockout stages of the World Cup 10 minutes before half time, working the ball onto his left foot and sliding the ball beyond Mat Ryan from just inside the penalty area.

Julian Alvarez appeared to have settled the contest shortly before the hour mark when he capitalised on a dreadful error from Ryan, but Craig Goodwin’s deflected effort ensured a tense finish.

Substitute Lisandro Martinez made a sensational tackle to deny Aziz Behich late on but Lionel Scaloni’s team held on to set up a last eight clash against Holland.
