Thai police have joined their Malaysian counterparts to raid a house in the Malaysian state of Penang on Tuesday night to crack a call-centre scam gang.
The move followed complaints that a number of Thai victims were duped in the past month into transferring a total of Bt400,000 to con artists claiming to be from the state authorities.
Deputy Chief of the Thai Tourist Police Bureau Maj Gen Surachate Hakparn also joined the officers in the raid on the house in Jalan Marie Pitchay at 11.30pm on Tuesday, which led to the apprehension of 10 Thai nationals, who worked as call operators, and two Taiwanese men who supervised them.
Officers said they found computers and cell phones set up in soundproofed cubicles along with a list of state officials and some conversation scripts between scammers and victims.
This was the Thai police’s third joint search operation with Malaysian officers on Malaysian soil to arrest suspects, he said, praising his counterparts for their good co-operation and swift investigating and locating the suspects as well as allowing the Thai police to join the arrest.
