On Monday, Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai urged Thai business operators to enhance their operating strategies to stay competitive.
Minister Phumtham highlighted the success of Chinese e-commerce platforms like JD.com, TikTok (Douyin), TaoBao, and Meituan, which have thrived by offering same-day delivery in select areas. He emphasized that continuous improvement in business operations is crucial, following insights from a report by Oranuch Wannapinyo, director of the Department of International Trade Promotion’s (DITP) office in Guangzhou.
The report noted that same-day delivery has become increasingly popular among Chinese consumers, with 64% opting for this service when available. The Covid-19 pandemic has further accelerated this trend, with 75% of consumers now preferring same-day delivery.
In response to this shift, Chinese e-commerce platforms have introduced various rapid delivery options. For example, Alibaba recently launched its instant delivery service on its TaoBao app and courier service Ele.me. JD.com offers a nine-minute delivery guarantee through JD Instant Delivery, while Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) has joined the trend, with numerous stores, including Xiaomi Home, participating in the initiative.
Minister Phumtham recommended that Thai business operators study these successful strategies from Chinese platforms, which could greatly benefit small and medium-sized enterprises in Thailand.
