A 32-year-old hunter is recovering in an Alaska hospital after being mauled by a bear and subsequently shot in the leg during an attempt to fend off the animal, according to US authorities.
The incident occurred on Saturday on the Kenai Peninsula, where the hunter sustained serious injuries from both the bear attack and the gunshot. The man was accompanied by a hunting partner, who fired a weapon during the altercation in a remote area near the Resurrection Pass trail. However, it remains unclear which individual fired the shot that injured the hunter, said Alaska State Troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain.
The injured hunter, whose name has not yet been released, was airlifted to a hospital in Anchorage for treatment.
The bear involved in the attack was killed, Mr. DeSpain confirmed.
