Hmong lawyer arrested with 800kg of ‘ice’, say police

Chiang Rai police have arrested a Hmong lawyer while she was allegedly driving a pickup truck with 800 kilograms of crystal meth, or “ice”, on board.

Police said the arrest was made at 3am on the Thoeng-Chiang Rai road in front of Tha Sai Market in Tambon Tha Sai of Chiang Rai’s Muang district.

Acting on tips-off, police patrolled the road and spotted a white pickup with a modified cold storage on its back. They said they stopped the vehicle and found the drugs in 32 bags.

The suspect was identified as Chayada Chaiwaenkwaen, 29, a resident of Moo 11 village, in Tambon Papae in Chiang Mai’s Mae Taeng district.

Police said she admitted that she was trying to smuggle the drug from Chiang Rai’s Thoeng district to a recipient in Chiang Mai. She said she had an accomplice who drove another vehicle ahead of her to inform her of road checkpoints, but he fled after the arrest.
