Gareth Southgate was approached about the possibility of managing Manchester United, but he remained firm in his commitment to his current role as England manager.
Southgate’s primary focus is on leading the Three Lions at the European Championships in Germany next month. The tournament begins on June 14, with England’s first match against Serbia two days later. Although Southgate’s contract with England runs out in December, no decisions about his future will be made until after the tournament, with the FA hoping he will stay on.
When asked about his future last month, Southgate emphasized that he would not entertain discussions about other positions while he is still in his current role. Southgate is on good terms with INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford and has previously worked closely with incoming United sporting director Dan Ashworth.
Meanwhile, Manchester United is conducting a review of Erik ten Hag’s two-year tenure as manager. Potential candidates for the role include Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel, and Thomas Frank. However, Southgate remains dedicated to his task of leading England at Euro 2024.
United’s review process comes amid various managerial speculations. Pochettino and Tuchel have been considered before, but there are reservations about Tuchel’s relatively short stints at previous clubs. Pochettino, admired by key figures at United, remains a strong candidate. Kieran McKenna, currently at Ipswich, and Thomas Frank of Brentford have also been noted for their managerial qualities.
As the situation develops, Southgate’s unwavering focus on England’s success at the European Championships remains clear.
