Thieves broke into the grounds of Windsor Castle, the residence of King Charles located west of London, stealing two farm vehicles in a significant security breach. The incident occurred on October 13 but was only reported recently by the British tabloid, The Sun. Thames Valley Police confirmed the theft in a statement to CNN.
The burglary took place around 11:45 PM (6:45 PM ET) when the intruders accessed a farm building on royal property. According to police, the suspects made off with a black Isuzu pickup truck and a red quad bike. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Reports indicate that two masked men scaled a 6-foot fence to enter the Crown Estate, then used the stolen truck to ram through a security gate before fleeing the scene. At the time of the break-in, King Charles and Queen Camilla were not in residence; Charles was in Scotland and returned to London the following day.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their children, reside at Adelaide Cottage, which is located within the Windsor Castle grounds, and they likely would have been home during the incident.
Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace have both refrained from commenting on security matters. The breach revives concerns over royal security, particularly following a serious incident on Christmas Day 2021 when a man armed with a crossbow attempted to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II while she was at Windsor Castle.
The would-be assailant, Jaswant Singh Chail, was 19 at the time of his arrest and was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2023 for his actions.
