Hull KR reclaimed the top spot in the Betfred Super League with a commanding 36-4 victory over Catalans Dragons at Elland Road, but the match was overshadowed by a biting allegation involving Mikey Lewis and César Rouge.
Mikey Lewis claimed that he was bitten by the Catalans Dragons full-back during a confrontation in the 57th minute of the game. The incident took place after Lewis intervened in a scuffle while defending his teammate, Jez Litten. Referee Tom Grant noted the incident to be reviewed by the Match Review Panel on Monday.
“It’s just one of those things where I’m trying to look after Jez and push him off,” Lewis explained to Sky Sports. “My hand ended up in his mouth, and he bit down. Rugby league is a tough enough sport, and biting shouldn’t be part of it.” He indicated he would let the Rugby Football League handle the situation moving forward.
Catalans head coach Steve McNamara questioned the validity of the allegation, suggesting Lewis may have put his hand in Rouge’s mouth inadvertently. “From what I saw, both were standing up, and Mikey Lewis put his hand in his mouth and moved him around,” McNamara pointed out. “I don’t know how you get a biting allegation from that.”
Further commenting in his post-match press conference, McNamara expressed surprise at the accusation against Rouge, saying, “Cesar is pretty upset about being accused of biting; he has done nothing but stood there while someone put their hand in his mouth. I’d be very surprised if any action is taken against him.”
Despite the controversy, Hull KR’s victory showcased outstanding performances, including two tries each from Elliot Minchella, Ryan Hall, and Kelepi Tanginoa as they celebrated their top position in the league standings.
