Birmingham City came from behind to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over Wrexham at St Andrew’s, with Jay Stansfield scoring twice and Tomoki Iwata adding a stunning long-range goal. The match was witnessed by high-profile fans, including David Beckham, Tom Brady, and Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney.
Wrexham started strong and took the lead early when Dwight McNeil capitalized on a mistake from Amadou Onana, scoring in the third minute. A second goal quickly followed as Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed in a free-kick from McNeil, putting the visitors ahead 2-0.
However, Birmingham responded just before halftime, with Stansfield netting his first goal of the match after capitalizing on a rebound. Despite missing a clear chance to extend their lead, Wrexham couldn’t maintain control as Birmingham began to apply pressure.
Stansfield leveled the match with a well-placed header, and shortly after, Iwata struck from long distance to claim the lead. Although Wrexham pushed for an equalizer, including a late save from Birmingham’s keeper to deny Matheus Cunha, they fell short.
Another Strong Performance
In a post-match interview, Birmingham manager Chris Davies praised the team’s resilience: “I think it was our best performance so far. Despite the tough start, the players responded excellently. We created consistent attacking waves and played the ball into good areas.”
Wrexham’s Missed Opportunities
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson reflected on the game’s turning points: “We started excellently but failed to recover properly after conceding our first goal. In the second half, we sat too deep and didn’t engage quickly enough, allowing Birmingham to capitalize on their quality.”
With this result, Birmingham moves into a stronger position in the league, while Wrexham is left searching for answers after yet another defeat. Both teams will look to capitalize on their performances as the season progresses.
