At least 10 people have lost their lives following a fire at a retirement home in northern Spain, with two additional individuals reported in critical condition. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday at the Jardines de Villafranca residence in Villafranca de Ebro, Zaragoza.
According to Diario Sur, the fire resulted in multiple injuries, with several residents receiving treatment for smoke inhalation. Reports indicate that the victims all succumbed to smoke inhalation.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 5 AM (4 AM UK time). The fire reportedly originated in one of the residents’ rooms, as confirmed by Fernando Beltran, the national government’s representative in the region.
The retirement home accommodates 82 elderly residents, and emergency services, including firefighters, paramedics, and police, remain on-site to manage the situation.
Firefighters worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control. The cause of the fire is still unknown and is currently under investigation.
